The Academy of Spherical Arts Permanent Collection
The Academy of Spherical Arts was founded in 1991. Its location in the original warehouse, where John Brunswick manufactured his billiard tables at the turn of the last century, provides a unique venue for art.
From the beginning local artists exhibited their work on our walls. In 1995, we formalized the gallery space and curated over fifty shows in the ensuing years. Artists were given exhibition space, publicly, and an opening in return for a piece of work. Thus, the permanent collection was born. We are proud of our artists and feel that their diverse work reflects Toronto, in the closing years of the twentieth century.
From the historical recordings of the photography, that present an existential twist, to the realistic portrayals of the human condition, viewers are challenged. Colour, texture and line, resolve the plastic issues raised in the pure abstractions, providing mirages for the imagination.
The Permanent Collection explores rather than defines, and opens a dialogue that questions our past, while finding a rhythm that guides us into the complexities of our new millennium.
All of our artists continue to work and exhibit in Canada and can be contacted through the Academy.
